Muscle Energy Technique (MET) — Used in Your Sports Massage
Muscle Energy Technique isn't something you'd book on its own — it's one of the tools I use during sports massage and deep tissue sessions to restore range of motion in muscles that have become chronically tight or short.
How it works
It's a form of active stretching: I take the muscle to the edge of its current range, you gently push back against my resistance for around 10 seconds, then relax and breathe out as I ease the stretch a little further. We repeat this a few times, and each round nudges the muscle's usable range a bit further than passive stretching alone would achieve. You won't feel much during the technique itself, but the muscle group typically feels noticeably looser and more mobile once we finish that section. When I use it
MET tends to come out for tight hip flexors, hamstrings, calves, and shoulders and areas that respond well to active, controlled stretching rather than just pressure. If you're dealing with a specific mobility restriction rather than general tension, mention it when we book and I'll build MET into the session.
