What is petrissage technique?

Derived from the French word pétrir, meaning "to knead", petrissage is a massage technique that uses rhythmic compression and manipulation of the soft tissues.

It can be performed superficially or more deeply, depending on the desired therapeutic effect.

Petrissage involves kneading movements using the hands, thumbs, fingers, or forearms. These techniques are carried out with one or both hands, applying alternating pressure to lift, compress, roll, and release the muscles and surrounding soft tissues. Pressure may be applied by gently lifting the tissues away from underlying structures or by compressing them towards the structures beneath.

Common petrissage techniques include:

  • Kneading

  • Wringing

  • Skin rolling

  • Pick-up-and-squeeze movements.
